The New Zealand All Blacks

Alpaca Blog

We are still looking at our new arrivals on the farm with wonder. The New Zealand All Blacks were originally supposed to be with us by May of this year. We won’t go into details here but suffice to say the last 10 weeks have been extremely stressful for the buyers, sellers and those working in official capacities on both sides of the world. Goodness knows when we will see our other purchases…

But, Geronimo and Intrigue are finally here and we welcome them with open arms. They are fit and well and settling with apparent ease. The home they have left is superb and these two are fit, strong and healthy as well as very friendly. We will do our absolute best to ensure they remain that way. I might have to buy them a cross trainer each as they are used to running up and down very big hills!

We have purchased, had screened and imported a proven, 4 1/2 year old male and a pregnant female. Both have been purchased from Nevalea Alpacas black breeding program. We have loved working with Leonie and Neville Walker and look forward to continuing our relationship with them. With their fabulous phenotypes and the genetics these true black alpacas bring some fabulous opportunities to our program and we feel very excited!

Many people’s focus is on the males they use in their breeding program but the girls must not be forgotten. With some of our darling older girls getting on a bit we wanted to add some fresh genetics to our core herd.

Intrique is a highly regarded female at Nevalea. A strong framed, true black female she carries the fleece attributes we seek for our breeding program; true black without colour contamination, brightness, density and that all important handle that makes true black finished products so very luxurious. It’s all very well having a description but when we actually got our hands on Intrigue’s fleece, we could not believe the softness of it. It has a high frequency crimp and is almost as bright as MFI Kapow’s .. and that is saying something! Very low guard hair along with low SD was also on our wish list and Intrigue delivers on all of these.

Intrigue is pregnant to Sunsetestate Soho (Sire: Sunsetestate Nitro Dam: Canchones Sabi) who caught my eye but remains in New Zealand. We can’t wait to see what they produce for us next year.

For now though, Intrigue can do whatever she wants. We are leaving her to settle with new friends and giving her a much needed rest after her travels. She does have to provide post import samples from time to time but takes it all in her stride. If she is unimpressed, she just looks at me quietly and rolls her eyes!! Such a calm and gentle girl and at the beginning of her breeding career. Welcome to England Intrigue!
