Alpaca Blog, Herd Sires

WD Miguel of Fowberry is the best example of a mature true black male we have seen. Purchased from Fowberry Alpacas in May 2016, we are truly honored to have him here on farm with us to further our breeding program.

Multiple Champion in Australia, Miguel was imported by Fowberry Alpacas and remains the only Samaria Valley Saladin son in the UK. He has a strong black lineage on both sides of his pedigree with a background of notable names. Miguel has followed in his sire’s footsteps by consistently performing in the show ring on his own merit and also winning over white progeny groups (including those by Jolimont Warrior) in the progeny classes with his black half brother.

Miguel’s sire, Samaria Valley Saladin is having a huge impact on black genetics in Australia at the moment and being heavily used in embryo transfer programs. This multi-champion young male won back-to-back best black fleece, at the Australian National Show 2005 and 2006 at the Royal Melbourne 2005 and 2006 and at Bendigo, 2004, 2005 and 2006. His fleece has won ten out of eleven of it’s last outings and received some exceptional comments from judges, including “Superior white fleece characteristics, captured in a black fleece.” Saladin is a big bold macho with an impressive, correct frame to carry his outstanding fleece on. His progeny are consistently winning in the show ring.

Miguel’s dam: Warramunga Downs Ghemma comes from a productive line of prize-winning females going back eight years to Miguel’s grand-dam, Warramunga Downs Rebah (Ghemma’s dam) winning 1st Intermediate Black at the Royal Melbourne show 1999. This undeniably fine-fleeced female line includes a great-grand dam recording fleece statistics of 25μ, SD 4.0 at nineteen years old! Ghemma has been so successful for Warramaunga Downs, that she has a full sister.

Not shown in the UK, Miguel has stayed away from the limelight. Despite being bred very selectively in the UK he has produced many Champion and prize winning progeny. Some of his progeny from our herd will become available for sale from 2017.
Miguel has the kindest temperament of any alpaca we have met. He is easy and straightforward to handle and is first choice for handling workshops. He gets on well with our 4 other herd sires and his is cria have delightful temperaments.

Miguel is of medium build with strong bone and a very well balanced frame. He has a beautiful head and projects a regal presence.

Miguel’s fleece is remarkable. Solid true black with well aligned uniform staples, excellent brightness and striking softness, now aged 10 yrs he is only just beginning to produce the odd white fibre. His fleece is dense and characterful with a beautifully soft handle. Breeding fine fleeces for longer is a goal we all strive for and Miguel’s fibre micron and SD has remained consistently low.

A most valuable trait in Miguel is his low primary / secondary fibre ratio and low numbers of strong medulated fibre. This trait is rare in black huacayas and something to be celebrated.

Now settled with us at our bio-secure farm in Southern England, we are going to make Miguel available for limited drive by matings subject to our terms and conditions. We know he has a lot to offer the discerning black breeder.

At Fowberry Alpacas, Miguel’s 2016 cria was the second densest of all their cria and that is very impressive!
